Ariadne Software are pleased to advise our customers that all modules of the CoolSpools V7 application have been fully tested on the IBM i 7.6 operating system, and the CoolSpools application was found to be fully functional without requiring any software updates.
CoolSpools Version 7, which has been available since 2014, has been tested successfully on IBM i 7.6, but previous CoolSpools versions (including CoolSpools Version 6) have not been tested, and customers that choose to run these older versions of CoolSpools on an IBM i 7.6 server do so at their own risk.
License Keys
An operating system upgrade does not require a change of CoolSpools license keys, but please bear in mind that you may require new CoolSpools license keys if your upgrade also includes migration to new hardware, since CoolSpools licensing is based upon machine serial number. Read our full license transfer process guide.
CoolSpools SMTP User Profile
One configuration change may be needed by sites that use the CoolSpools email module – the CoolSpools SMTP jobs (CM_SNDSVRR and CM_RTYSVRR) that are started with command STRSMTPSVR use the IBM system API QTOCRTVTCPA. Starting from IBM i 7.6, calls to this API require the user to have special authority *IOSYSCFG. The system supplied default CoolSpools configuration specifies QUSER as the runtime user for these SMTP jobs, but the user QUSER does not have the required *IOSYSCFG special authority, so the CoolSpools SMTP jobs may fail when they are started on an IBM i 7.6 server.
Fortunately there is a simple remedy – you can either modify the CoolSpools SMTP user (be it QUSER or another user profile) to have the *IOSYSCFG special authority, or you can change the user profile configured in CFGSMTPSVR to be a different user, for example COOLSPOOLS, and ensure that the new user has the *IOSYSCFG special authority.
Virtual Serial Number
Whilst not a new feature in IBM i 7.6, we should remind you that if you are planning to use an IBM issued Virtual Serial Number (VSN) on your IBM i server, as introduced in IBM i 7.5 and IBM i 7.4 TR6, then this requires CoolSpools Version 7 fix pack 068 or above. Virtual Serial Numbers are not fully supported by older CoolSpools versions, and may result in software licensing issues. Please notify CoolSpools Support if you have plans to run CoolSpools on a server with a Virtual Serial Number.
For details of new system features that were introduced in IBM i 7.6 please see the IBM announcement.
